ASCII

ASCII, abbreviated from American Standard Code for Information Interchange, is a character encoding standard for electronic communication. It is one of the most popular coding method used by computers for converting letters, numbers, punctuation and control codes into digital form. Since 2007, UTF-8 superseded it on the Web.

ASCII was developed by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), and has been designated as an international standard by the International Standards Organization (ISO), which is called the ISO 646 standard.

The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) prefers the name US-ASCII for this character encoding.
